The goal of root canal therapy is to clean, shape, and fill (obturate) the root canal space to eliminate an infection or prevent an infection from developing. In most cases, this is completed in one appointment approximately 60-to-70 minutes long.
The following diagrams illustrate root canal therapy from start to finish. After filling the root canal space with gutta-percha, the tooth is ready for a final restoration, usually a bonded, white filling, or a white crown.
